[Unveiled](https://substack.com/@unveiledbridgingthegap) May 01, 2023 1 Share Metaverse, as a concept, is evolving to find its definition, but there seems to be broad consensus that it is the next iteration of the internet. As we continue to better understand this virtual universe, and the full spectrum of its implications on the future and our lives, we are at a unique inflection point - one that positions us to prevent the errors of the past and fix things from the beginning. But we need to recognize this unique moment and act fast, before the current reality cascades into the metaverse. In a recent [report from McKinsey](https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/diversity-and-inclusion/even-in-the-metaverse-women-remain-locked-out-of-leadership-roles), the trends are giving us warning signs as summarized in the 3 key data points below. - **More women than men are power users in the metaverse:** 41% of women had used a primary metaverse platform or participated in a digital world for more than a year, compared with 34% of men. In addition, 35% of the women surveyed are power users, spending more than three hours a week in the metaverse, compared with 29% of men - **Women are spearheading and implementing more metaverse initiatives:** Female executives are 20% more likely than their male counterparts to implement multiple metaverse initiatives, with 60% of surveyed women reporting that they have implemented more than two metaverse-related initiatives - **Early signs already present a concerning gender disparity in leadership:** In organizations shaping metaverse standards, 90% of leadership roles are held by men; and in the past 5 years, male-led metaverse companies received a higher share of total entrepreneurial funding than female-led metaverse companies We have a unique opportunity to prevent this from becoming a pervasive issue that is already plaguing the ‘real’ world.
